I started this blog, aiming atleast to post something once a week. But it became the same story once again. :( Got busy with my office work, didn’t manage to make time for blogging (a lame excuse). But thought of not wasting web space of wordpress by starting a new blog, for my once in months post. So I’m gonna continue this blog. Hopefully I’ll be able to add something atleast once in months.

There are few news this time around. I got my final academic standing of the degree. I was fortunate enough to be one of the 28 people who were at the first class level of the Bachelor of the Science of Engineering, specialized in Computer Science and Engineering. The joy was multiplied by 4, as all my room mates at the hostel(Isuru,Rajeev and Bunty) were in the 28. We were planning a celebration for months. But didn’t happen it yet.

Now tt’s about my job. Hmm… up to now, I did what I’ve been assigned to do with my fullest strength. First two months were total waste of time. I was throwing here and there in different projects, and didn’t get anytime to do anything. Only thing I did was read a book on Erlang, which is the main platform development language which I didn’t have any exposure. After two months, I was assigned to a specific project and upto now I’m  working in it. Due to the ,confidentiality which I’m entitled to preserve, I can’t blog anything on the projects I do at my workplace.

There’s lot more to post. As it’s been three months from the last post. Hope to add more later. That’s it for the day.

No luck @ GSOC, but No good bye to LimeSurvey!!! April 21, 2009

I prepared a proposal with the assistance of the probable mentor of the project idea for Limesurvey for this year’s GSOC. Limesurvey has applied for 5 slots from Google. But they have only agreed to grant for 3 slots. According to my mentor, I was placed 5th of the received eligible 44 proposals when they ranked them. So I’m not lucky enough to get through.

But this is not the end of the world. I tried … I came close and this is only my first attempt. Sadly I won’t be able to apply for GSOC next year as I’m finishing my undergrad studies this year. Nevertheless, I’m not giving up on my desire to contribute to opensource. Eventhough I’m not selected for GSOC, I’m going to implement my project idea for Limesurvey. Its not money I went after, its the pride and satisfaction. So still I can achieve my major goal. Everything happens for the best!!!

It’s Google Summer Of Code(GSOC) again. The biggest open source promotion program of the world. Google funds, around 1000 students from all over the world to contribute to Open Source Projects selected by them. My university, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, became the highest no. of accepted proposals from a single education institution at last years GSOC.

As a follower and a contributer of the open source movement, I thought of having a go at this year’s GSOC. My idea was accelerated, when I came to know that, Limesurvey, the open source survey tool, which I knows the most as a open source project has been accepted as a mentoring organzation at this year’s GSOC. I hope I will get a chance…. Let’s see how it goes…

I started blogging few times. But none went a long very well. Thought of starting it yet again. This time around I’m not going to let it go easily. Whatever I write here, if I haven’t explicitly stated or quoted, are my own ideas or imaginations. Anyone can comment on them and you are most welcome to do that.
